THE GEOMAGNET AND THE MAGNETORECEPTION

DID YOU KNOW THAT WE LIVE ON TOP OF A GIANT MAGNET??🤯

Yes, the earth is like a big magnet with a north and south pole even if it seems unbelievable!!

Our planet is made by layers with different compositions and different physical properties. The crust of the Earth has some permanent magnetization and the Earth’s core generates its magnetic field sustaining the main part of the field. So we could say that the Earth is, therefore, a “magnet.”
Furthermore, the earth magnetic field’s it’s really important cause it represents a shield against the lethal winds of sun radiation and distant stars. If we didn’t have it our ozone would have been stripped away.

The geomagnet can also affect animals.

Have you ever wondered how the birds travel hundreds or thousands of miles without getting lost?

The answer is due to the magnetoreception which is a sense that allows an organism to detect the Earth’s magnetic field.
Not only birds have it but also arthropods, mollusks, and vertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals). The sense is mainly used for orientation and navigation, but it may help some animals to form regional maps.

How can animals detect the magnetic field?

According to the researchers, animals can detect magnetic fields symbiotically via bacteria living inside them (magnetotactic bacteria MTB), which orient themselves along magnetic field lines due to a chain of magnetic structures inside their bodies called magnetosomes.

Can you name an animal that you think can sense the magnetic field? Let us know in the comment down below😉
