How does an electromagnet work?

An electromagnet works by passing an electric current through a metal wire, creating a temporary magnetic field that increases as the voltage increases. Coiling the wire concentrates and amplifies this field, and inserting a ferromagnetic core (like iron) boost its strength dramatically.

What’s the difference between a solenoid and an electromagnet?

A solenoid is a helical coil of wire that produces a magnetic field when electric current flows through it. An electromagnet is a broader term for any magnet powered by electricity. Usually an electromagnet works with the same principle as a solenoid, but the copper coil is wrapped around an iron core to amplify the magnetic field strength. This can be increased by more than 1000 times!

What’s the difference between an electromagnet and an electro-permanent magnet?

An electromagnet is made by a metal wire coiled around an iron core. It requires constant flow of electricity to maintain its magnetic field and loses it completely when the current is turned off.

An electro-permanent magnet main component is a permanent magnet. An electrical pulse is used only to flip its polarity.

Changing the polarity of a permanent magnet causes it to attract (hold), repel, or not interact with ferromagnetic materials.The same result can be achieved with an electromagnet, by inverting the flow of the current or switching it off.

Can electromagnet work without electricity?

No, a constant flow of electric current in required for it to work. If the current is switched off or if there is a power outage, the magnetic field dissipates almost immediately.
