NEODYMIUM MAGNETS: THE STRONGEST COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE MAGNETS
Neodymium Magnets are very strong magnets made by an alloy of neodymium, iron and boron (NdFeB). Neodymium is a rare-earth element (REE), also called rare-earth metal or (in context) rare-earth oxide. Even in their smallest size Neodymium Magnets have a Very High Magnetic Strength.

- The strongest commercially available magnets. Even the standard N35 magnetization is several times stronger than other kinds of magnets;
- Magnets with very high coercivity, that is the ability to resist demagnetizationIt and indicates a high material's stability;
- They are smooth, shiny and polish;
- Great flexibility of use and suitable for multiple applications. Magnets with hole (countersunk, threaded, passing), magnets with threaded rod or socket, fishing magnets, magnets for magnetotherapy, self adhesive magnets and more;
- Available in many different shapes and sizes. Discs, blocks, rings and spheres. From 2mm micro magnets to 15cm very large magnets. Can be as thin as 0.5mm;
- Quite expensive compared to ferrite magnets. Neodymium is a rare-earth element mined in only a few countries (80-90% of the production is in China) and the manufacturing process is energy-intensive. Higher magnetizations like N52 or N56 are even more expensive;
- Quite brittle, must be handled with care;
- Vulnerable to rust and corrosion. To avoid these problems, they can be coated with zinc or nickel, or encapsulated in a container (stainless steel, PVC, or rubber);
- The working temperature of a standard neodymium magnet is approximately 80°C. This means that if exposed to higher temperatures, it may experience temporary performance loss or even permanent damage. Special heat resistant neodymium magnets can be used with temperatures up to 220°C.

MAGNETIZATION GRADES FOR NEODYMIUM MAGNETS
The Grade of a Neodymium Magnet is specified by a number (usually from 35 to 56) that represents its degree of Magnetic Strength. This is linked to the magnetic flux output per unit of volume and it increases with the quantity of Neodymium present in the magnet. Higher values mean stronger magnets (while more expensive). For reference, a small N45 3 x 2mm Neodymium Disc has a strength of attraction of 0,18 Kg, whereas a N48 Magnet of the same size has 0,25 Kg (39% more!).
MAGNETIC STRENGTH OF NEODYMIUM MAGNETS
Neodymium Magnets have a very high Magnetic Strength even in the smallest size. Their adhesive force (the property to stick to and attract ferromagnetic metals) is way stronger than other Magnets, like those made in Ferrite. But even among Neodymium Magnets there are different levels of strength, represented by their Grade.

Magnetic strength reference chart
These tables and charts refer to Magnetic Discs of different sizes: diameter X thickness in mm. N35, N38, N40, N42, N45, N48, N50, N52, N56 stand for Neodymium Magnets of the corresponding grade. In our tests, a dynamometer is used to measure the required force (in kg) to detach the magnet from a 10mm steel plate. We use one magnet at a time, at room temperature, with perfect adherence to a smooth steel surface.

NEODYMIUM MAGNETS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long do Neodymium Magnets last? How can they lose their magnetization?
Under normal circumstances, Permanent Neodymium Magnets lose just 1% of their magnetic strength each year. On the other hand, if they are exposed to temperatures higher than recommended (usually 80°C), or to electric discharges (galvanic bath), they can immediately lose performance or be permanently damaged. There are other factors that can cause a loss of magnetization such as: strong impacts, oxidation (rust) or proximity to other magnets (improper storage).

What temperature can a Neodymium Magnets withstand?
Standard Neodymium Magnets can be used at a maximum temperature of 80°C. Beyond this threshold there could be a temporary or permanent loss of magnetization (partial or total). Only special Heat Resistant neodymium magnets can withstand higher temperatures: up to 220°C.

In heat-resistant neodymium magnets, an acronym is used to define the degree of resistance: M, H, SH, UH, EH or TH.
All these acronyms indicate the maximum temperature a magnet can withstand without being damaged. A N35 neodymium magnet that can be used for applications up to 100°C (letter “M”) will be noted as N35M. “H” stands for up to 120°C, “SH” up to 150°C, “UH” up to 180°C, “EH” up to 200°C, and a “TH” up to 220°C.
